Effects of Sub-mm and Radio Point Sources on the Recovery of Sunyaev-zeldovich Galaxy Cluster Parameters

چکیده
Observations of clusters in the 30 to 350 GHz range can in principle be used to determine a galaxy cluster’s Comptonization parameter, y, peculiar velocity, v and gas temperature, Te via the dependence of the kinetic and thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effects on these parameters. Despite the significant contamination expected from thermal emission by dust in high-redshift galaxies, we find that the simultaneous determination of τ , v and Te is possible from observations with sensitivity of a few μK in 4 or more bands with arc minute resolution. After allowing for realistic levels of contamination by dusty galaxies and primary CMB anisotropy, we find that simultaneous determinations of velocities to an accuracy of better than 200 kms−1 and temperatures to roughly keV accuracy should be possible in the near future. With an X-ray determination of Te, only 3 bands are necessary for comparable accuracy on peculiar velocities. Contaminating synchrotron emission from cluster galaxies will probably not be a major contaminant of peculiar velocity measurements.

Modification of cluster radio halo appearance by the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect
We discuss the consequences of the spectral and morphological modification of galaxy cluster radio halos due to the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect for the interpretation of existing and upcoming high frequency radio observations. Likely these modifications have affected the interpretation of the existing Coma cluster radio data. The radio halo emission visible at low ( ∼ < 5 GHz) frequencies is ...
متن کاملCluster temperature profiles and Sunyaev-Zeldovich observations
Galaxy clusters are not iso-thermal, and the radial temperature dependence will affect the cluster parameters derived through the observation of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect. We show that the derived peculiar velocity will be systematically shifted by 10− 20%. For future all-sky surveys one cannot rely on the observationally expensive X-ray observations to remove this systematic error, but...
متن کاملAre Clusters Standard Candles? Galaxy Cluster Scaling Relations with the Sunyaev-zeldovich Effect
An extensive sample of galaxy clusters will be available in the coming years, detected through their Sunyaev–Zeldovich effect (SZE). We use a semi–analytic model to study the scientific yield of combining SZE data with X-ray and optical follow-up observations. If clusters at a given redshift zo can be identified with virialized, spherical halos, they populate a well–defined ”fundamental plane” ...
متن کاملSunyaev-Zeldovich effect in WMAP and its effect on cosmological parameters
We use multi-frequency information in first year WMAP data to search for the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect. WMAP has sufficiently broad frequency coverage to constrain SZ without the addition of higher frequency data: the SZ power spectrum amplitude is expected to increase 50% from W to Q frequency band. This, in combination with the low noise in WMAP, allows us to strongly constrain the SZ con...
متن کاملKinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect from galaxy cluster rotation
We show how the temperature and the polarisation of the cosmic microwave background are affected by bulk rotation of clusters of galaxies owing to the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. The main effects of rotation are (i) a shift of the position of the peak of the temperature fluctuation relative to the center of the cluster by a few percent of the core radius and (ii) a tilt of the direction o...
